The $3 Million Football Bet
Monday May 4, 2009
One of the most legendary football wagers ever placed occurred in the 1958 NFL Championship Game between the Colts and the Giants. The Colts were favored by 3.5 points and the number climbed as money came in on Johnny Unitas and company. The Colts ended up winning in overtime, 23-17, when Alan Ameche scored on a 1-yard run. Much has been made about the fact that the Colts elected to bypass a chip-shot field goal for the touchdown in order to cover the point spread, something Unitas would later laugh at.
But it was widely reported that Colts owner Carroll Rosenbloom did have a large wager on the game, which only added to the mystique of the game.
T.S. O' Connell, a respected sports card expert, talks a bit about the game with former PGA golfer Al Besselink in The $3 Million Football Bet.
