Definition: In the sports gambling world, "bookmaker" means somebody who accepts wagers on sporting events. Bookmaker is the term most often used when referring to somebody who operates legally, while "bookie" is generally thought of as the term used to refer to a person who accepts wagers illegally.
Also Known As: Bookie
Examples: In some parts of the world, a bookmaker is considered an extremely prestigious job.
