Low Scoring Underdog Winners

As I've remarked before, no other sports lends itself to peaks and valleys quite like baseball. The sheer length of the season and the fact that teams will play so many consecutive days ensures that teams will have some winning streaks and some losing streaks during the season.

One of my favorites wagers is betting underdogs off a win in their previous game. While I don't bet them blindly, it's always something that I pay attention to.

There is one situation that I'll give a bit of extra consideration and that's an underdog off a straight up win as an underdog while scoring three runs or less. Here's a team who didn't have its best offensive game, yet managed to win a game it was expected to lose and is expected to come on the short end once again.

Since the 2008 season, teams in this situation are 186-204 for a profit of $5,165 for a bettor wagering $100 per play. That's not bad for such a simple system.

Last year the system was 75-79 for a profit of $2,490. It dipped a bit in 2009, going 46-57 for a profit of $685 after going 65-68 for a profit of $1,990.

The beauty of betting underdogs is that you can less than half your bets and still show a nice profit. Betting underdogs isn't for everybody, as you're prone to longer losing streaks than if you bet on favorites, but it is the way to go if you're interested in showing a profit at the end of the year.
