NHL Playoff First Round Series Prices

The chase for Lord Stanley's Cup will officially begin tonight, as the NHL playoffs begin. There is much more parity in hockey than in most other sports, and the series odds reflect that, as there are just two favorites of -230 or greater.

Some of the series are tough to wager on, while there are a few that offer decent wagering propositions. We'll look at each one and try to come up with a few plays.

Washington -230, New York Rangers +190

Last year I went against my beloved New Jersey Devils in the first round of the playoffs and this year I'll do something almost as bad-take the New York Rangers. Do I expect them to win? No, but at +190 they are worth a small wager, as New York played the Capitals tough during the season and own a big advantage between the pipes.

Philadelphia -165, Buffalo +145

Buffalo also owns a big advantage between the pipes in this one, but doesn't offer quite the same value as New York. The Sabres get a lean, but probably won't get any of my money.

Boston -210, Montreal +180

This price is a bit higher than I expected, no doubt due to the premise that Boston's Tim Thomas will be starting every game. The Bruins took it easy on him during the regular season and it may pay off in a big way.

Can't back the favorite, but still not sure if Montreal is worth a wager.

Pittsburgh -140, Tampa Bay +120

Pittsburgh has managed to win without Crosby and Malkin, but Tampa definitely has the offensive edge in this one. If Roloson plays well, the Lightning have a definite chance to move on, but will be a bit hesitant to back them here.

San Jose -280, LA Kings +240

The loss of Kopitar is being given a bit too much weight in this one, as the Kings still have some solid players and a quality defense. Will have a small value play on L.A.

Vancouver -230, Chicago +190

The Canucks hope the third time is the charm, as Chicago has sent them home the past two years. No doubt Vancouver is the better team, but will make a price play on Chicago until the Canucks prove they can beat them in a seven-game series.

Detroit -180, Phoenix +160

The Coyotes' financial troubles are well known and a long playoff run would be the best thing for the team and the NHL, but hard to see them getting past a deep and talented Detroit team. Hate to play favorites, but would side with Detroit in this one.

Anaheim -130, Nashville +110

A decent match-up between two pretty evenly matched teams. Rinne has been solid all year for the Predators and like the pairing of Suter and Weber in the playoffs, so will take the underdog in this one.
