Those Wacky Super Bowl 45 Props
When it comes to the Super Bowl, there are no shortages of wagers that bettors may make. These range from the traditional point spread and total bets to proposition betting, which has become an out-of-control monster.Jay Kornegay, sportsbook manager of the Las Vegas Hilton, says that more than half of his wagers on the game come in the form of proposition bets. While that figure is no doubt higher than the average sportsbook, if just 15-percent of the money wagered on the game is done through proposition betting, we're talking about $1.5 billion to $1.8 billion being wagered on props. A staggering sum.
The coin toss is one of the most popular proposition wagers, while others are related to how certain players perform during the game. The number of passing yards by Aaron Rodgers is one example, while bettors can also wager on things such as the length of the first field goal or how many interceptions will be throw.
Then there are those bets that are in a league of their own and we'll look at some of those here.
Wacky Super Bowl 45 Proposition Bets
1. How long will Christina Aguilera take to sing the National Anthem?Over 1 minute, 54 seconds -175
Under 1 minute, 54 seconds +135
Bodog first opened this line at 1 minute, 52 seconds and the money came in on the over, forcing them to add several seconds to the time. Much of the early wagers likely had to do with the fact that she took 1:55 to sing the National Anthem before Game 7 of the NBA Finals.
She also sang before Game 6 of the series and was finished in 1:52 and has been known to be right around 1:50 while performing at several hockey games.
2. How many times will Fox mention Brett Favre during the telecast?
Over 2.5 -165
Under 2.5 +125
While most people may be tired of Favre and glad to see him gone, those wagering on the over are hoping to get one final reminder of the former Green Bay quarterback. If Rodgers has a decent passing day, this one will likely go over.
3. Will Fergie be dressed as a Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader at any point during the Halftime show?
Yes - +450
While many people grumbled about the Super Bowl's tendency to have "geezers" perform at halftime, such as Bruce Springsteen or The Who, the fact was that there were far more bets offered when those acts were performing. Wagering on this year's halftime show has been much been limited to Fergie and what she will wear, as opposed to anything having to do with the Black Eyed Peas.
4. What color Gatorade will be dumped on the winning coach?
Yellow +150
Clear/water +225
Orange +300
Red +500
Lime Green +550
Blue +1000
It's shocking to see how far the old lime green Gatorade has fallen out of favor over the years. The Gatorade that most of us grew up with has been reduced to being a 5.5-to-1 longshot to be dumped over the winning coach.
5. Who will the FOX announcers say has better hair on TV during the game?
Clay Matthews -120
Troy Polamalu -120
Matthews no doubt has one of the best heads of hair in the National Football League, but there's only one Troy Polamalu. The key will be if the Fox announcers are intelligent enough to recognize that fact or not.
6. What will the TV Rating be for the Super Bowl?
Over 46 rating -155
Under 46 rating +115
The Super Bowl has had at least a 40 rating for the past 20 years, but has never reached a 50 percent rating. Expect this year's viewership to be close to the 46 number, with some watching solely for the commercials.
There are other intersting bets, such as what Fergie will wear when she comes out at halftime, the color of Christina Aguilera's hair, which will be the highest-rated commercial to who the Super Bowl MVP will thank first, where God is the favorite and it's never a good idea to wager against the Big Guy upstairs.
Even if you don't have a real opinion on the game, there should be at least proposition wager that strikes your fancy.
