New Year's Eve Bowl GamesThe college bowl season is about to pick things up a couple of notches, as there are five games on the schedule for New Year's Eve. Many games are spread throughout the day, so bettors will have roughly 10.5 hours of football to look forward to.
The first game of the day pits Air Force against Houston and the Cougars are favored by five with a total of 63.
The key, naturally, will be how each team manages to stop the opposition. Houston will do its damage through the air, while the Falcons will run their traditional offense. Both teams should be a bit familiar with each other, as this will mark the third time the teams have met in the past 16 months, including last year's Armed Forces Bowl, which Houston won 34-28.
Tough game to handicap, so I'll side with the underdog in what could go either way.
Stanford and Oklahoma will meet in the Sun Bowl and the Sooners are favored by 10 with a total of 55.
The Pac-10 has looked anything but impressive this bowl season and the Cardinal figure to have their hands full with the Sooners. Still, the game has to be a bit of a disappointment to Oklahoma, so I'll grab the double-digit points, as double-digit dogs have been kind to us so far this bowl season.
Navy and Missouri meet in the Texas Bowl in another tough game to handicap. Missouri is the better team and looks tempting laying just 6.5 points, but hesitant to back the Tigers in this one.
Much like the Armed Forces Bowl, this will come down to Missouri's passing game against Navy's rushing attack.
Having to choose something, I'll take a shot on the game to go over the total of 51.5
Next on the schedule is a rather ugly Insight Bowl between two 6-6 teams, Iowa State and Minnesota. Minnesota is favored by two and the total is 48.5.
Iowa State had a remarkable turnaround from last season, but have to choose the Golphers in this spot.
The final game of the day is Tennessee and Virginia Tech in the Chik-Fil-A Bowl. Virginia Tech is favored by six points and the total is 50. Both teams love to run the ball and both defenses are good, but not great, stopping the run. That could lead to a lot of short runs eating up the clock, so we'll try the under and cheer for the clock to move.
